Outlander fans can't imagine the show without Caitriona Balfe playing the role of Claire Fraser. However, it turns out that a couple of her co-stars were actually in the running for the iconic role. A recent midseason finale left viewers eager for the next installment of the Lionsgate+ romantic drama.
Before Outlander premiered in 2014, Balfe auditioned along with several other actresses for the role of Claire. Surprisingly, two of her competitors ended up becoming her co-stars on the show. Nell Hudson, who plays Laoghaire MacKenzie, auditioned for the part of Claire. Although her character eventually marries Jamie, their marriage is declared void.
Another co-star who auditioned for the role of Claire was Laura Donnelly, who portrays Jamie's sister, Jenny Murray.
Donnelly is known for her roles in Britannia, Missing, and The Fall. Actor Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, spoke about reading with Donnelly and Hudson during auditions.
Outlander season seven is currently on hiatus, with part two not set to be released until 2024.
Fans will have to wait patiently for their favorite characters to return to Fraser's Ridge. In the meantime, viewers can catch up on previous seasons of Outlander on Lionsgate+.
