The ninth season of the medical drama series Chicago Med has introduced a new character played by a Grey's Anatomy alum. The show, which is part of the One Chicago franchise, follows the lives of Emergency Department doctors at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Season 9 premiered last week and features Sophia Ali in the role of Dr. Zola Ahmad. The character's unorthodox methods of treating patients cause tension at the hospital, particularly with Crockett, played by Dominic Rains.
This is not Ali's first time portraying a doctor, as she recurred as Dr. Dahlia Qadri on Grey's Anatomy. Luke Michell also joined the cast as Dr. Mitch Ripley in the season premiere. These new characters are meant to compensate for the absence of several core cast members from the previous season. The season premiere takes place several months after the events of the season 8 finale and sets up various storylines, including a rocky start for Dr.
Ripley and personal problems for Maggie Lockwood. The future of the show beyond season 9 is uncertain, but upcoming episodes will determine its success without the original cast members. Chicago Med airs on Wednesdays at 8pm ET on NBC. The series, created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, is part of the larger Chicago franchise, which includes Chicago Fire and Chicago P.
