Captain Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall, portrayed by Tobias Menzies, was one of the most despicable villains in Outlander. His sadistic nature was in stark contrast to his descendant, Frank Randall, who was Claire Fraser's first husband.
Despite the challenge of finding an actor to play such different characters, casting director Suzanne Smith revealed that it was fairly straightforward.
In an interview with Daily Express, she explained that they had Menzies audition for both roles by performing scenes with Black Jack and Frank. Menzies proved to be a one-take wonder and effortlessly portrayed both characters. Smith had known Menzies from his work in the theatre and was confident in his ability to handle the dual role. Menzies' portrayal of both sides of the character was praised, as it allowed him to showcase his versatility as an actor.
While Black Jack and Frank are both dead, the time-traveling element of Outlander leaves open the possibility of their return. Menzies may have the chance to reprise his role in future seasons.
