Outlander casting boss addresses bringing in new Jenny Murray star

Starz has announced that actress Kristin Atherton will replace Laura Donnelly as Jenny Murray in Outlander. Donnelly was unable to return to the show due to other commitments.

Fans will meet the new Jenny, Jamie Fraser's sister, in season seven, part two, after Jamie's return to Scotland. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Express, Outlander's casting director Suzanne Smith discussed how Atherton landed the role.

Smith explained that Atherton has the ability to stand up to her on-screen brother and bring out Jenny's fiery personality. Smith also addressed the challenges of recasting, mentioning that fans have a specific actress in mind, but the passage of time since Donnelly's portrayal means that the essence of the character is what matters most. Smith was responsible for casting Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and Tobias Menzies in their respective roles as well.

She is currently working on season eight of Outlander, which will be the final season, and also on the prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
