In a recent episode of the official Outlander podcast, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts discussed the concerns he and the team had regarding Jamie Fraser's hand injury in the midseason finale of the show.
In Diana Gabaldon's novels, Jamie's finger is amputated after being badly smashed during a battle, but in the TV series, his wife Claire, a medic, is able to save it using her 20th-century medical knowledge.
Roberts revealed that they were aware of the challenges they would face in portraying the severity of the injury and the subsequent healing process within the limited time frame of an episode. Despite these concerns, Roberts expressed his astonishment at how the team was able to successfully bring the story to life. He emphasized the importance of not breaking the flow of the narrative and ensuring a seamless viewing experience for both book readers and those unfamiliar with the story.
Roberts further explained that certain plot points, like Jamie's hand injury, needed to be adapted to fit the context of the TV show while maintaining continuity and authenticity.
