It appears that our brief break from the misogynistic content from the Two and a Half Men team is about to come to an end. According to Deadline, Netflix is in the final stages of securing a deal to produce The Ranch, a comedy series featuring Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson as brothers managing their family's ranch after Kutcher's character's time as an NFL star. The show is the brainchild of Don Reo and Jim Patterson, the duo behind Two and a Half Men, and is expected to consist of 20 episodes released in two 10-episode blocks within a year.
This development raises some concerns for Netflix. Known for its ambitious original programming, the decision to invest in a show that bears striking similarities to Two and a Half Men may raise eyebrows. Additionally, Kutcher's lack of effort in his post-That 70s Show projects does not inspire confidence.
The 20-episode format also seems risky, as seen with Grace & Frankie's struggle to maintain quality over a 13-episode season.
By pursuing more traditional sitcom content, Netflix may dilute its reputation as an industry disruptor, potentially limiting the creation of groundbreaking shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.
While some may remain hopeful, the decision to support creators of dated content does not bode well for Netflix's future as a pioneering entertainment company.
